What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a screw made of titanium and is surgically placed into your jaw by a dentist/denturist. The implant mimics the root of your tooth and lessens the effects of bone loss resulting from missing teeth.

How long does it take to do a tooth implant?

Every patient and procedure is different, but there are certain factors that determine the length of time it takes for a dental implant procedure to be completed, including:

• Your overall dental health
• The number of teeth (and which ones are) being replaced
• Whether your teeth will need to be extracted
• Whether a bone grafting needs to be performed

These above factors will determine how many visits you will need to make to your denturist before the tooth implant procedure is finished.

What happens during the dental implant procedure?

It takes two phases for the dental implant to be accomplished and it can take up to seven months for the entire process to be completed (depending on your rate of healing.)
 

Phase 1

• Your mouth will be numbed with local anesthesia
• An incision is then made in your gum where the tooth implant will go
• The implant is then screwed into place
• Your gums will be closed over the implant and you may have 1-2 stitches
• Over the course of several months, the tooth implant will fuse itself to your jaw bone.

Phase 2

The second phase of the dental implant procedure will take place approximately three months later and involves:

• The denturist making a small incision in the gum to expose the tooth implant
• A small extension being placed on the implant: this is where the denture will be placed
• After taking denture impressions, your new denture will be made and placed onto the implant
