4 Tips For Eating With Your New Complete Dentures

One of the biggest concerns among new denture wearers is how to eat with their replacement teeth, especially in public. While it’s true that getting used to the way the teeth and supports feel against your gums and palate does take some practice, with the following tips, you’ll be enjoying your favorite foods again in no time!

1. Start with Liquids

For the first few days of wearing your complete dentures, it’s a good idea to stick to a liquid diet.  Immediately trying to chew could be very uncomfortable and potentially harm your sensitive gums, so give them a few days to adjust to your replacement teeth before progressing to solid foods.

Some foods you can eat include:

  • Soup
  • Oatmeal
  • Apple sauce
  • Pudding
  • Mashed potatoes or other mashed vegetables

2. Chew Evenly

Most people tend to chew on one side of their mouth more than the other, but for complete denture wearers, this could make it more likely for your replacement teeth to slip out of place. Once you start eating solid foods again, make sure to chew slowly and use both sides of your mouth equally.

This will help keep the dentures more stable, and eventually, you’ll do this without even thinking about it.

3. Be Careful with Hot Foods

While you may love your coffee or hot chocolate, it’s important to be extra careful with any hot liquids or foods right after you have gotten your complete dentures. This is because they have an insulating quality that can make you not realize something is too hot until it’s too late.

TIP: Give a hot drink a small sip at first to make sure that it’s safe and comfortable to have.

4. Avoid Sticky Foods

When you wear complete/partial dentures, it is advised to limit your intake of sticky foods as they can become easily trapped between your dentures and gums, making you more likely to develop irritation or an infection. This includes foods such as:

  • Candies
  • Peanut butter
  • Gum
  • Certain berries

Of course, this doesn’t mean you should limit them entirely! Feel free to enjoy your favorite sticky foods but just be sure to clean your dentures and mouth thoroughly afterwards.

Remember, a Little Soreness is Okay!

Even if you do take things slow and easy, remember that your body and gums are getting used to your new dentures, so expect your jaw and/or gums to feel a bit sore during the process.

If you do get a particular sore spot on your gums, or the pain becomes persistent or severe, be sure to contact your local denturist straight away so they can adjust your dentures to ensure they fit comfortably.
