What is a Denture Reline?

Daily wearing of dentures can make your replacement teeth loose over time. Not only is this situation very uncomfortable, but it can also cause extreme difficulty in performing everyday tasks such as chewing and talking.

Denture relining is a cost-effective solution for reshaping the underside of a denture to ensure that it fits comfortably once again and doesn’t rest against the gum. This will:

2 Types of Denture Relines: Which One is Right For You?

Depending on your needs and particular concerns, your denturist may suggest a hard or soft reline. Here is a breakdown of each type of reline to help you understand which may best suit your needs.
 

Hard Denture Reline

To accommodate the long-term changes in your palate and gum structures, a hard reline may be required. Typically, this is the type of reline that should be done on your dentures every two years.

Ideal for: Repairing the fit of your replacement teeth without having to do a completely new fitting from scratch.

What happens during a hard reline:

• Your denturist will remove some of the plastic from the inside of the denture.
• Putty is placed on all areas of the dentures that make contact with mouth tissue and an impression is made of the shape of your mouth and gums.
• The denture is then recreated in the lab so that it can once again fit your mouth perfectly.
• The impression material will be replaced by pink, hard acrylic in exactly the same shape as the original impression material.

Soft Denture Reline

In some cases, patients find that they cannot wear dentures because their gums are too tender and they keep getting sore spots. In such a case, your denture can be relined with a material that remains pliable for 1-2 years before it needs replacement.

Hard vs Soft Relines: The main difference between a soft and hard reline is the material used to replace the hard acrylic. A softer, more porous material is used for a soft reline, providing greater comfort to sensitive denture wearers.

However, soft relines do require more regular adjustments than hard relines.
