2 Types of Denture Repairs: Reline vs Rebase

Dentures are a convenient, comfortable, and affordable option for patients who are missing some or all of their teeth. However, they do involve some extra care that normal teeth don’t need. One of the steps you need to take to keep your dentures in the best shape is to reline and/or rebase them.

Here’s everything you need to know about denture reline vs rebase:

  Denture Reline

As you get older, the shape of your gums and jawbone will naturally change, meaning that your replacement teeth won’t fit as well as they used to. A denture reline is designed to adapt the fitting surface of your denture to accommodate such changes to your mouth and gums, ensuring that your dentures always fit well and feel comfortable.

There are two types of denture relines:

Hard Denture Reline: A hard denture reline will improve the stability of your dentures. During this process:

• The old fitting surface of your replacement teeth will be removed.
• A soft impression material is placed inside the surface of your denture and used to take an accurate impression of your mouth.
• The impression is used to fabricate a model of a new, hard acrylic denture base.
  
  Soft Denture Reline: For patients who have sensitive gums, hard dentures can cause discomfort and sore spots. A soft denture reline in this case is preferable as it uses a soft and pliable material that makes the denture more comfortable to wear.

Given that the material can harden over time, a soft denture reline needs to be repeated every 1-2 years. The procedure involves:
 

• Removing the hard plastic from the fitting surface of your denture.
• Placing an impression material over the newly-trimmed fitting surface and taking an impression of your mouth.
• Using the impression to accurately place soft reline material on the fitting surface of your denture.
• Removing the hard plastic from the fitting surface of the denture.

  Denture Rebase

Unlike a denture reline, a rebase is a more drastic adjustment and requires a thorough replacement of all the acrylic in your denture base. This type of denture repair is used when the denture teeth are in good condition, but the base needs a complete adjustment.

Your denturist may recommend a rebase if:

• You’ve damaged or broken your denture
• The base of your denture is becoming weak
• You want to change your immediate denture into a permanent one
• Your dentures aren’t fitting as comfortably as they used to

How often is a denture rebase required? If you want to renew the lifespan of your dentures and ensure that they are always functioning like new, you need a denture rebase every 5-7 years.
