Denture Rebase: What It Is and What It Does

A denture rebase is performed when the artificial teeth in your dentures are still in good working order but the base itself has become worn, faded, or damaged.

This procedure is much more cost effective than having to replace your entire dentures and can help prolong the life of them by another few years. It also has no effect on the way your dentures look since the teeth aren't being altered in any way.

How a Denture Rebase Is Performed

When your denturist determines your dentures require a rebase due to the acrylic base being worn, faded, or damaged, then the following will take place:

  • An impression of your mouth will be made
  • The artificial teeth in your dentures will be sectioned off from the old base and all the remaining material will be carefully removed from the artificial teeth
  • Adhesive wax is then used to keep your artificial teeth in place as the cast from the earlier impression is covered with wax
  • The cast is worked upon some more by your denturist and the artificial teeth receive more wax so the proper alignment and thickness is achieved
  • Your artificial teeth will now be securely in place in the cast and your denturist will ensure it is strong enough to withstand the rigours of everyday life through further processing
  • A remount will then occur to make sure your dentures fit exactly as they're meant to

Having a denture rebase performed to fix any issues you're currently experiencing with the acrylic base of your dentures is a cost-effective way to prolong the life of them and ensure they continue to function the way they're supposed to.
