Characteristics of a Standard Denture

Summary

Dentures are prosthetic devices that are used to replace missing teeth and like most procurable objects, they come in a variety of categories and tiers.  These tiers are differentiated by the material composition, hardness and durability.  Understanding the common attributes of each type of denture will ensure that patients make the right choice for their mouth and specific situation.  This week we’re focusing on the characteristics of standard dentures.

One Size Fits All

Standards Dentures only come in a single “standard” size and shape based on an average human mouth. This is why they require almost 6 times more adjustments compared to precision dentures.

Long Transition Periods

Due to the number adjustments needed to achieve an acceptable “fit”, standard dentures involve a longer transition period compared to precision dentures. Once the denturist has created the dentures, the patient must wear them for a period of time and report back with any issues. The denturist will make adjustments and the cycle is repeated until an acceptable fit is achieved.

Acrylic Composition

Acrylic teeth are easy to adjust and trim. They are chemically bonded to the denture base because they are made of the same material.  Dentures made with Acrylic Teeth tend to more susceptible to abrasion and easily stained compared composite teeth.

Longevity – Due to its composition, standard denture will typically need to be replaced every 5 years.
