Step-By-Step Guide to The Denture Procedure

The idea of getting dentures can be a little intimidating at first, but it’s important to remember that with the right solutions, they can transform your life for the better.

Understanding the process of getting replacement teeth - from denture impressions to construction - can help make the process seem a little less overwhelming and prepare you for the steps ahead.

Here is what to expect from your denture procedure:
 

DENTURE IMPRESSIONS
The first step in getting dentures is to visit your local denture clinic. Your denturist will take a preliminary impression of your mouth as a guide for making your new dentures.

If you have to have some teeth extracted, a denture impression is done after your gums have healed (4-6 weeks)
 

SELECTING YOUR NEW TEETH
With the help of your denturist, you then select which tooth shapes and colors (shades of white) you want for your replacement teeth.

The objective is to make them look as real and natural as possible.
 

INITIAL FITTING
Once the dentures are made, you will be scheduled for an appointment at your denture clinic for an initial fitting.
The dentures will be placed in your mouth and your denturist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a good and comfortable fit.

**After the initial fitting, you will probably need some additional appointments for fine adjustments to eliminate any sore spots**

Getting Used to Your New Dentures

  • Don’t bite down hard with your front teeth. Try to balance food evenly in your mouth when you chew, so your dentures remain securely in place.
  • Hot foods will take some time to get used to, as your mouth won’t be able to sense heat as it did before.
  • Avoid chewy or hard foods, like caramel or chewing gum.

Tips for Speaking With Your New Dentures

  • Practice speaking out loud while wearing your new dentures.
  • Read from a book or magazine in front of a mirror or a loved one.
  • Try biting down and swallowing just before you speak. This helps set your full/partial denture in place.
