6 Tips For Getting Used to Your New Dentures

Summary

While dentures can significantly improve your quality of life and physical appearance,it is no secret that they take some time to get used to. First-time denture wearers may find that certain actions, such as eating and talking, are affected as they adjust to their new set of teeth. At Future Smiles, we want to ensure that our patients are always comfortable and happy, so we have compiled a list of six things you can do as you get used to your new dentures.

Wear them at night

While you should always make sure to clean your dentures every day, sleeping with them on during the first few nights can help first-time denture wearers become more accustomed to the change. Once they begin to feel more natural, you should begin removing them at bedtime and keep up with a disiplined cleaning routine.

Eat soft foods

Learning to chew with your dentures is bound to take some time. If you are a first-time denture wearer, you may want to consider practicing in private first, and only with soft foods. Once you begin to feel more comfortable, you can move onto harder items. Remember to chew on both sides of your mouth simultaneously so that your teeth stay stabilized. Avoid using your front teeth to bite into anything as this may dislodge your dentures.

Rinse with warm water

It is very normal for first-time denture wearers to experience some gum soreness as they adjust to their new teeth. If you develop a sore spot, rinse it with warm salt water for a few days. If you find that the problem persists, visit your denturist as it could be related to a poor fit and you may need a readjustment.

Try an adhesive

The lower denture is always more difficult to adjust to than the upper one as it does not have as much suction. Using an adhesive such as Poligrip will hold it in place as your mouth adjusts to your new dentures. They are simple to use and provide a strong and long-lasting grip so you don't have to worry about any potentially embarrassing moments!

Read a book

For first-time denture wearers, new dentures can cause slurred speech. This can be improved by reading a book to help you practice your punctuation. Focus on words that you are finding particularly troublesome, repeating them in private until your mouth makes the subtle changes it needs in order to master them.

Be patient

Above all, it is important to remember that, during the first few weeks, it is common for your new dentures to feel awkward but soon, your tongue and cheek muscles will instinctively learn how to hold them in place. Remember, just because you are a first-time denture wearer, doesn't mean you should stop smiling and laughing!
