5 Simple Rules for Denture Care and Maintenance

Summary

Now that you have your new dentures from Future Smiles you want to make sure you keep them in excellent condition so that you can continue to enjoy them for years to come. To help you keep your dentures clean and in good working order just follow these 5 simple rules:

Handle them with care

Dentures are surprisingly fragile, so you want to make sure you are handling them carefully. Don’t use toothpicks on them, as this can scratch the surface and create places for harmful bacteria to hide. Clean them over a bowl of water or a folded towel, so that if you accidentally drop them there is something to cushion the blow and reduce the chances of damage.

Clean them often

Dentures need to be cleaned often, because just like natural teeth they can harbor bacteria and tartar and can become stained. Improperly cleaned dentures can result in infection and irritation of the gums, so keeping them clean is imperative. Remove your dentures after every meal and clean them carefully with a soft bristle denture brush. You can also leave them to soak overnight  in a special denture disinfecting solution.

Give your dentures a break

Always remove your dentures before bed, and let your mouth rest for 6 to 8 hours. This allows the soft tissue in your mouth to rest and recover. Let your dentures soak in a glass of warm water or a special denture cleansing solution, which will also help to disinfect your dentures and remove stains, plaque, tartar and bacteria.

Look after your entire mouth

Your teeth are only one part of your mouth. Even if you have dentures good gum care is important to avoid diseases such as gingivitis. After you remove your dentures give your mouth a good rinse and then use a soft toothbrush or face cloth to gently massage your gums. If you wear only partial dentures be sure to brush your remaining teeth thoroughly with toothpaste and a toothbrush.
Don’t forget to visit your denturist regularly

Be sure to visit your denturist at least once a year so that you can have your gums examined for changes or sores. Your denturist will also help you track any changes in fit, which typically occur because over time our gums and bones shift. If your dentures are no longer fitting correctly they may irritate your mouth, causing sores and other problems. If you have any questions about your dentures and their proper care book an appointment with Vadim Dumbrava at Future Smiles by calling 403.475.0016 and visit us today.
