Foods Denture Wearers Should AVOID This Holiday Season

At Future Smiles, we know that some foods (no matter how tempting!) just don’t mesh well with dentures. In order to avoid any possible pain or discomfort, it’s recommended that you avoid the following:
 

• Sticky Foods - During this holiday season, denturists recommend limiting your intake of sticky foods such as toffee and caramel. This is because they can cling to your replacement teeth and make it very difficult to chew
• Popcorn - Popcorn isn’t bad for your oral health but the little unpopped kernels that can somehow end up in your mouth might crack or compromise the function of your dentures.
• Hard nuts & candies - Hard candies and nuts are problematic as the force needed to bite into them creates undue stress on the teeth and palate of your dentures.
• Steak and other tough meat - Chewy meat is tough to break down with dentures. In addition, such foods can cause your dentures to become unstable and dislodge. They can also lead to sore spots.

Take care with weak or old dentures

Be especially careful if your denture is older than seven years, as by that time the chewing surface is worn down, causing you to bite and chew with excessive force. Loose or ill-fitting dentures contribute to uneven stresses being placed on your replacement teeth, leading to splits, cracks and breaks.

KEEP IN MIND: If your denture has previously broken, it’s wise to treat them extra-gently to prevent excessive and damaging stress to the replacement teeth.
