10 Tips For Taking Care Of Your Temporary Crown

If you are getting a tooth implant, your dentist will give you a temporary crown that will serve your needs while a permanent crown is being made. It will help protect the sensitivity and pulp of your prepared tooth.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that a temporary crown is not as strong or durable as a permanent one, and as a result, it’s important to take care of it to ensure it functions well.

Here are a few tips to follow:

1. Avoid eating for at least 30 minutes after your procedure so that the dental cement can harden and set.
2. Avoid chewing gum, nuts, hard candies, or other sticky/chewy foods until your permanent crown is placed.
3. Don’t brush or floss too hard around your temporary crown. While it’s very important to keep the area clean, you must use caution so you don’t damage it.
4. Don’t floss up and down. Instead, floss coming down through the top of the teeth and then remove it by pulling it out from the side.
5. Rinse with warm salt water. This will help your gum tissue heal faster and ensure that your temporary crown doesn’t become loose.
6. Be careful when chewing on hard foods, ice, or nibbling on foreign objects like pencils and pens, as they could potentially crack the biting surface of your temporary crown, while damaging the abutment as well.
7. Take painkillers as prescribed. After the anesthetic wears off following your tooth implant, your tooth may feel sensitive to hot or cold because the temporary crown won’t fit perfectly. So make sure to take any painkillers your dentist/denturist has prescribed.
8. Try not to use the temporary crown very much. You can minimize use by chewing on the opposite side of the mouth for the majority of the time.  
9. Ask your denturist about using alcohol-free antibacterial mouth rinse if you have experienced frequent gum infections in the past, or were ever treated for periodontitis.
10. If you are a smoker, it’s important not to smoke while your tooth implant is healing and you have a temporary crown. It’s advisable that you stop tobacco use altogether to ensure the longevity of your implant.
